A Different World (1989-93)
Diahann Carroll guest stars as Marion Gilbert, the
mother of Whitley Gilbert Wayne (played by Jasmine Guy) in the popular sitcom,
A Different World - originally a spin-off to The Cosby Show
but from season two re-made into a series of its own by the talented Debbie
Allen. The first episode Diahann appears in, "For She's Only A Bird In A Gilded
Cage", aired in 1989, and is about how Mrs. Gilbert is determined to find
a boyfriend for her daughter. Ms. Carroll earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding
Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
Diahann appeared in a total of seven episodes, the last time (with Patti LaBelle)
being in the episode "When One Door Closes..., Part 2".
