The Canadian Cast recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's
Sunset Boulevard is in my opinion very, very good. Diahann Carroll
has in some reviews been criticized for no longer delivering strong enough
vocals, but other gave rave reviews for her emotionally charged performance.
Here she really show her strength in that she is both a singer and an actress
- not like some of the other performers portraying Norma Desmond - a singer
or an actress. Rex Smith is a good leading man, with a youthful and
beautiful voice. He tend to overact in some songs, but that's OK.
This cast album was recorded in Toronto, Canada in November 1995. It
is a single disc (there never was a full score recorded), and it was released
in Canada on the Polydor label, in co-operation with Really Useful Records
and Livent Music.
Polydor 314 529 757-2, Canada 1995.
